Hi Everyone On Thursday 20th at 7.00pm we have our next Umbrella Hangout. The theme is creating our own representation, and I'm asking that people bring items that are significant to their LGBT identity or history. You can sign up HERE. So this week I wanted to ask - Why do we like to see LGBTQ people represented in media? What do we get out of seeing a fictional character in film , TV or books with the same gender or sexuality as us? Do we like LGBT explicitly being included in non-fiction media? Looking forward to reading what you think. Avo

I am non-binary and was out as non-binary at the time, but I cried when I saw the re-make of ghost busters. Women/femme people being that badass in a modern film made me feel really seen.

It's so important, there was so little representation when I was a kid and most gay characters on-screen were quite tired stereotypes. It really limited my idea of what I could, and even should be.

I think it definitely helps to see lgbtq people being included in a film or TV program/series or on the radio. Feeling like we're being seen and represented as equals is very important. However, although I respect all trans people, I personally don't really resonate with programs like Ru Paul's drag race, as I think it still re-enforces stereotypes.
