Hi I wanted to talk about self care over the holidays. We can be around family or friends who do not support us or have transphobic or homophobic views. It be hard to be around these people and stay calm with our mental health in tact. It's understandable that being subject to criticism, ignorance or abuse due to being LGBTQ could provoke conflict, making you dread the holidays. We can try and control how we feel but creating a safe environment for ourselves and taking care of ourselves, even if we can't control how other treat us. What can we do to de-stress and centre ourselves during the holidays? How do we affirm who we are around others who do not? I googled something like this 5 or 6 years ago when I fist came out. Things have gotten much better but sadly still I approach the holidays with slight apprehension rather than excitement, knowing to expect an onslaught of misgendering. The happy news is, it is all unintentional, and you do get used to it. I took some advice I found online and made myself some queer Christmas decorations, and put them on the inside my wardrobe so they stayed private. What do you recommend?
