Can anyone tell me why birth certificates need to contain gender information? Is this not the foundation of discrimination? The only people who need to know someones gender is the individual and sexual health practitioners. Governments will say they need to know statistics for planning purposes, that is what censuses are for, it does not justify recording gender at birth. In the current climate it consumes resources to correct the record if the individual wants to change the designation. And to come back to the health care professionals they should and hopefully will treat the individual in their care and not care what a piece of paper says. The governments' website Data protection says that users of personal data are required to ensure data is: "used for specified, explicit purposes", what are they using gender information for? "used in a way that is adequate, relevant and limited to only what is necessary", why is it necessary for the government to know the gender that was assigned to someone at birth? "accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date", why are the government holding data that is incorrect? Final question. In recording an individuals gender on a birth certificate, is the government breaking their own law? For no good reason. Thank you for reading.
