Was just wondering if anyone had any advice on what things work for them? Did you get over depression, and if so what helped? any advice appreciated.

Hi there, I'm one of the OutLife support team. Thanks for posting, I'm guessing from the above that you're experiencing depression or something similar? You don't mention but I'm gonna move forward with that as the assumption. I'm sorry if you're having a tough time of it at the moment. Without a doubt some of our members will have some personal stories they'd like to contribute to this. For my part, I've experienced depression for 10+ years. Though I've never managed to 'get over it' per-se, I have found a medication regime which keeps the worst of my symptoms at bay, and I'm always learning new ways to improve my quality of life. Recently I've started going for long, cold, wintery runs with my dog, which is great for my self-esteem and seems to keep me calmer. Taking up art, working on sleep hygiene, and practising mindfulness have also had an impact. It's still difficult some days, and I'm not sure I'm ever going to be clear of depression, but I've learned a hell of a lot in the past few years about myself and how to best take care of my mind! What works for one person may not work for another, and it's best to try and explore these things yourself (and, of course, with the advice of a medical professional. I've put together a few links that you might find useful: - The OutLife main site has a brief guide to antidepressants www.outlife.org.uk/antidepressants-what-you-need-to-know if you want to know more, you could also check out ReThink, which has a more in-depth guide www.rethink.org/diagnosis-treatment/medications/antidepressants- Mind also has a great collection of stories from its users about their journeys in mental health. Maybe reading some of these could help you find out more? www.mind.org.uk/information-support/your-stories/?sni=1392- The OutLife main site also has some great advice about self-care and how to improve your mental health with or without medication. www.outlife.org.uk/7-ways-to-improve-your-mental-healthIf you'd like to talk to someone who's LGBT about any issues you're facing you could also call Switchboard, which is run by LGBT volunteers: 0300 330 0630. The line is open from 10am to 10pm. I hope some of the above helps. Let us know how you get along, and take care of yourself. Justin OutLife Support Team
