Hi, so something my girlfriend and I were talking about the other day was around how do you identify as a lesbian when you are seeing a GP or nurse.
Do you casually drop it like it's hot, go full out there or are you a bit weary due to worrying about a negative reaction?

The title of this made me laugh a bit. You can tell it's nearly Easter time. I started thinking about Cadbury Creme Eggs!
I tend to wait and see who I'm dealing with before. If it's a male Dr I'm less likely to tell them straight away. If its a female then I'm a bit more open. My current GP is Trans and I don't hold anything back. I'd love if there was a list of GPs who are LGBT friendly so you know if you can be honest or not. Like a rating system.

WhipIT, have you heard of the Pride in Practice scheme from LGBT Foundation? They're accrediting GP surgeries' LGBT awareness and general care for LGBT people (Gold, Silver, Bronze). The award hasn't rolled out nationwide yet but if you're in London or Manchester, it's a good marker to look for! We'll also be featuring these surgeries in our FindOut map. Keep your eyes peeled!

Ohhhh, thank you Justin for letting me know. I'm in London so this is something I'll look out for or ask about the next time I'm in with my GP.

I always tell straight out if and when needed. It allows me to know who and who not I should engage with. I've only had 2 doctors who have shown negative reactions.

I always feel uncomfortable telling. I don’t know why but it’s just that look they give you and you know what they are thinking. It makes me feel uncomfortable

I don't volunteer that I am a lesbian, unless they ask. In that case, being I'm completely out, I'm completely honest about it. The only exceptions are my urologist and gynecologist. I told them both up front that I'm lesbian. Since they're both women, I was much more comfortable about it than I would have been if they were men.
