I know this sounds like a stupid question, but is it possible to not feel like a boy or girl? I've never really felt like a boy, but I don't think I'm a girl (and that means trans I guess?) either.

Hi there, Thanks for your post. It's not a stupid question at all! Gender is a far from simple, and something that a lot of people come to question at many different points in life, whether young or old. Most of us are taught at a young age about the two most common genders, "man" and "woman", or "male" and "female", but as we've come to understand gender more clearly, it turns out that there are a lot of people who don't fit those labels. Trans people, for instance, may be identified as one sex at birth, but realise they're actually a different gender as they grow up. There are also lots of people who don't fit the categorisations of male, female, transmale, or transfemale, and don't identify with any of these genders. Some people are agender (does not identify themselves as having a particular gender), some are gender non-binary (identifying as either having a gender which is in-between or beyond the two categories ‘man’ and ‘woman). There's some great information out there which will help you learn more about gender and maybe you can start sifting through some of those questions you've been asking. - The APA have a great resource on being gender-nonbinary: www.apadivisions.org/division-44/resources/advocacy/non-binary-facts.pdf- As does Trans Equality: transequality.org/issues/resources/understanding-non-binary-people-how-to-be-respectful-and-supportive- If this is all TL;DR, then try scrolling through this glossary of terms from the Proud Trust, which is short, snappy, and pretty informative www.theproudtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/download-manager-files/1516697937wpdm_Glossary%20of%20LGBT+%20Terminology.pdf- If you'd rather talk to someone about how you're feeling, then try giving Switchboard a call. They're an LGBTQ+ charity totally manned by LGBTQ+ volunteers, and will gladly talk to you about any and all things gender: 0300 330 0630, 10am - 10pm. I hope that you find some of the above helpful. Remember, you don't have to have all the answers right away, and it's totally normal to take your time and see how you feel. Discovering ourselves is a journey! If you've got any more questions, feel free to shoot them this way, and do let us know how you get on. Justin
