Hello jhobson67,
Welcome to the Forums. Thank you for writing about yourself. You know, it is always helpful to write things down and people do read and can often relate, which makes us all feel less alone. I think there is a lot of loneliness around and it's good to reach out in whatever medium you find suits you.
You mention thinking the Switchboard is not applicable to you. Please do ring if you want to talk about absolutely anything that is on your mind even if it is just a chat with a friendly person who will understand where you are coming from. Just wanting a chat is all the excuse you need, you do not have to be desperate or in a bad state at all! Just be upfront about that so the person on the other end knows. You don't have to disclose anything you don't want to. It is all anonymous and confidential. I have used the service myself since it started in 1974 and have always been uplifted and encouraged.
I am a cisgender gay man but also have an autistic spectrum condition - one they used to call Aspergers. As such I can relate to being very largely happy being alone most of the time but like you I also crave a level of social interaction. Also like you, groups and meet-ups scare the begonias out of me!
So what I am saying is, you are not alone and if you want to interact on here, then that would be lovely. A lot of us are very busy with various things so the response time to posts can be a bit long. So if you are patient, then it would work for you.
You mention you are a carer - been there myself and very much experienced the social disconnection thing. It is important that you get appropriate support and are enabled to reconnect in a way that you can cope with. I have found this on the web - click on this link:-
devoncarers.org.uk/information-and-advice/information/about-me/i-am-a-lgbt-carer/
May be if you contact them they will be able to help you. Worth a try perhaps.
Warm wishes
Simon.
