Hi OutLifers! It's been a long while since an LGBTQ+ drama has produced so many emotions online. As the new Channel 4 drama is currently the talk of the internet, this week we wanted to ask what you thought. If you were young and queer in the 80s, what did you make of the show? Was it accurate? Do you have a Jill? Are you a Jill?! Are the show's themes and plots still relevant to young people's experience? So many questions! Obviously the show brings up some pretty intense emotions and memories for people who directly lived through the trauma, loss, and bigotry of the AIDS crisis, so please, always be respectful others and above all, be kind.

Never seen it and IDK if I will. Once I tried watching "Sense8" but it was boring, so I abandoned it. And with that religious name "It's a sin", I'm not sure I even wanna watch this. The only social tv shows (as I call them - as in tv shows that are not sci-fi, fantasy or horror) that I've seen so far and like are "Chicago Fire" and "Love, Victor". It's really very hard to get my attention with anything social. I caught episodes on TV by accident of "Chicago Fire" and "Love, Victor" (my sister was watching them), I liked what I saw and started watching them. Otherwise I don't watch TV at all, I have a computer for that and it's better - no commercials.

I’m a straight woman but I’m so confused by some of the views I see in todays world views. I was raised catholic but luckily by a family that views that God knew what he was doing when he made each and everyone of us and that sexuality is not a choice, accident or sin! We are who we are. Though, an atheist now I maintain that sentiment. I didn’t watch the documentary state but an eye opener to the way the world can act was a sky documentary Cured. About the change in how the medical community considered homosexuality. I hope we have evolved since then, I fear we have not. I don’t personally believe in sins as such but if I did it would be judgement. “They” believe lying is a sin, don’t lie. Be you. You are worth more than their judgement.

It was the name of a popular Pet Shop Boys hit from the time and fairly accurately sums up the prevailing public / govt / media attitudes toward us lgbt people at time. I recall a Johovas Witness knocking on my door back then with the opening line did I beleive Aids was God punishment for homosexuals - he really beleived as many christian's did that it was a sin. (I replied that as a lesbian I was in the group least likely to catch it and did he think I was blessed. We had quite a row. ) Thatcher didn't actually use the word 'sin' but she did act as if it was and introduced a law labelling us as having 'pretended family relationships'.

As a tv drama I thought 'Its a Sin' was well made - and I liked the music. If you are unaware of queer history its a reasonable introduction to what it was like to be gay in the 80s, As someone who lived through it I've say a lot of the story felt very familiar even though it was lacking in lesbians, or was Jill supposed to be lesbian? I'm not sure why it fictionalises real groups and happenings eg there is a helpline that is obviously supposed to be lesbian and gay switchboard and there's an Aids activist dwmo that is obviously supposed to be ActUp but they are renamed in this drama. The blurring of fiction/ reality jarred for me.
If anyone is interested in our history I would recommend the film 'Pride' about the lesbians and gays who supported the miners and the French film about Act Up in Paris '134 BPM'
