LGBTQ+ Sex Ed - a complete failure?

Happy Monday everyone!!!
Today, I want to talk about LGBTQ+ experiences of Relationships and Sex Education.
An article in Gay Times tells us how recent data from UK Health Security Agency suggests that urgent improvement of inclusive RSE needs to be implemented - www.gaytimes.co.uk/life/relationships-sex-education-a-new-generation-of-queer-youth-is-being-failed-yet-again/
I want to hear all about your experiences!!
Were your classes separated by gender?
Was the language heteronormative - girlfriend, boyfriend?
Did faith or religion play a role in what was taught?
Was there any mention of anal sex at all?
Did they talk about female pleasure or the orgasm gap?
Discussing safe sex or preaching abstinence?
Was HIV heavily stigmatised?
Terrified of having sex because of STI horror stories and unplanned pregnancies?
Despite society moving forward in its inclusion of LGBTQ+ people, it seems that young queer people are once again being let down by their education. Many queer youth have a limited number of trusted adults they feel comfortable talking to so they will seek out information elsewhere. Whether from TV shows, books, social media or even porn, some of these resources might not be age-appropriate, nor medically accurate which can lead to young people being misinformed. Receiving sufficient and accurate information is vital to reduce risk behaviour and support positive sexual health outcomes.
Having said that, there are trailblazing shows such as Sex Education, providing much needed accessibility to information and advice that we were/are denied in school. And of course there are other popular queer shows like It's A Sin and Pose giving us an insight into LGBTQ+ sexual health.
If not from school, where did you find information about LGBTQ+ sex, sexual health and wellbeing? Do you still feel relatively uninformed?
Things needs to change!
I want to see inclusive programmes that help young people understand gender identity and sexuality.
I want to see consent being taught as a priority.
I want to see positive LGBTQ+ role models, their romantic relationships and families incorporated into these lessons.
I want them to talk about protection during sex for people of ALL identities.
I want the teaching to dispel common myths and stereotypes.
I want everyone to feel included and understood.
What do YOU want to see in terms of LGBTQ+ RSE for this generation of queer youth?
With kindness,
River
