I believe that bisexuality and homosexuality are just as common in men as they are in women. Unfortunately, most men just don't dare to come out, because they are afraid that it will make them appear weak and less masculine. This is due to society, which is still largely shaped by outdated conservative views.
In other words, I believe that bisexual and gay men are just as numerous as bisexual women and lesbians. But I also believe that such men are more concerned or reluctant to come out where such women are often proud to come out.
if this is true, and I have no reason to believe that it isn't, then this would support the original theory. It's safe to assume that a good portion of male sports players are gay, but don't come out. If you look at women's sports, particularly the soccer teams, lesbians and bi-sexual women are very prevalent, but the big difference is, they've come out, and are proud of it.
What do you all think?

Hey Laurette,
I'd definitely agree that there's a lot of stigma surrounding bisexuality and coming out! Bi people are often otherised by the cis-het community and by queer people, which goes a long way to explaining why their health inequalities, especially mental health, are so starkly worse than most other queer groups.
As for sport, I think it's a given that there are a huge number of sportspeople, especially in football and rugby, who have yet to come out for fear of their careers as the number of openly gay players in top leagues is astonishingly low and absolutely nowhere near representative. It's just my opinion, but before these people can feel safe enough to come out we need a rather significant culture shift. The England team showing support for LGBTQ+ people last year was a great gesture, but we've been running "no homophobia in sport" campaigns for years now and seen fairly little change so I'm unsure when this may happen.
