So I saw the poster for this site up in Heaven club tonight and it made me laugh because I personally think that it’s so necessary. I’m 23, live in London and have felt so socially isolated it has led to ongoing depression for me. Loneliness support seems to be there for the elderly but I feel like there is hardly anything out there for young people. In desperate times I have gone to local social groups and it’s always people much older than me and who I have nothing in common with so connections are superficial.
It hit home a few weeks ago when I turned 23 and nobody other than family texted me. Like damn, this is the level of social connection I have in my life!
Really for me how I think I ended up in this situation is a cocktail of difficult circumstances. I made a few friends at secondary school but due to being gender non conforming etc I was mercifully bullied which o think has given me very poor self confidence which holds me back. I left school and didn’t go to uni so didn’t have any obvious social opportunities. At work most people are 40-60 years old so again, connections are superficial. Covid came when I was 19-21 and a lot of friends dropped off then. I think a lot of people now have much worsened social anxiety and self esteem issues post covid due to the damage it caused during years that are so important for connection and social development.
Anyway I’m talking to myself. But the advert stuck out to me. Not only do I really need “befriending support” but I also really want to be able to help raise the issue of LGBT young adult isolation. Mix that in with a high prevelance of mental illnesses and it’s easy to see why suicide rates are high.
Hi everyone pleased to meet you all.

Lots of youth groups in London go up to 25, there are also quite a few LGBTQ ones. Give me an email at alex.thomas@lgbthero.org.uk if you would like and we can see if we can find some in person stuff for you as well.
