Have we shot ourselves in the foot?
Linked with gnc is unnecessarily gendered items.
Take watches……
Shop windows display watches grouped by gender.
So I have a small wrist. A chunky watch looks ridiculous on me. So I choose a small watch….. which is in a group according to gender.
By wearing that small watch am I gender non conforming? I don’t think so. But 9/10 people will say it’s a lady’s watch. Not to me it isn’t. It’s a small watch.
Many things are unnecessarily gendered and that kind of forces the issue of gnc. And I’m the worst offender. I think to myself that I’m going gnc mode. But…… and here’s the thing….. Joe Public doesn’t seem to think so. Over several years of wearing small watches….. nobody has said anything like ‘oh….. you’re wearing a lady’s watch…..’.
I’m now adopting an attitude of ‘there’s no such thing as gnc. There are just different….. styles…. Of items’.

Hi thanks for your post. Sounds like you are on a 'journey' of discovery which is healthy to do. Sometimes attending social support groups can help understand other viewpoints and validate experiences. >> www.lgbthero.org.uk/trans-hangouts OR www.lgbthero.org.uk/lgbtq-hangoutsGender non-conforming is a broad term referring to people who do not behave in a way that conforms to the traditional expectations of their gender, or whose gender expression does not fit neatly into a category. I feel it is also liberating when there are no set rules around how you express or experience your gender. Gender identity is the term used to describe how a person feels internally about their own gender and is a spectrum. For example, a person’s gender identity might mean they identify as a man, a woman, nonbinary, or something completely different. Gender identity is distinct from gender expression, which is how someone presents their gender externally, through things like clothes, appearance and behaviour. Many LGBT people are brought up to believe that the only two things that anyone can be are a man or a woman, male or female, but the reality for a huge amount of LGBTQ+ people is much less clear-cut than that.
